Game Preview: Huguenot Hosts Clover Hill With History Again Within Reach
RICHMOND, Va. – After opening the season with a statement victory on the road, Huguenot finally comes home.
The Falcons make their 2026 debut at McFee Field Friday night when Clover Hill visits South Richmond for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Huguenot enters the home opener 1-0 following a 28-7 victory at Highland Springs, while Clover Hill arrives at 0-1 after falling 49-9 to Meadowbrook in its season opener.
Friday will also be a Green Out, with Huguenot fans encouraged to fill McFee Field in green for the first home game of the season.
The matchup carries another layer of significance for the Falcons. Clover Hill has been tied to several milestone performances during the first three seasons of the Charles Scott Sr. era, and another piece of Huguenot history could be within reach Friday night.
Three Touchdowns From History
Charles Scott Jr. enters the home opener on the verge of two of the most significant quarterback records in program history.
Scott currently has 59 career total touchdowns, three behind former Huguenot quarterback Omar Kizzie, who finished his career with 62. Scott also enters Friday with 56 career touchdown passes, two behind Kizzie’s program record of 58.
That creates the possibility of Scott becoming Huguenot’s all-time leader in both categories just two games into his junior season.
Scott opened 2026 by completing 14 of 19 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns against Highland Springs while adding another 52 yards on the ground. His next opportunity comes against the same opponent he produced a record-setting performance against one year ago.
On Sept. 11, 2025, Scott threw for 409 yards against Clover Hill, surpassing Kizzie’s previous Huguenot single-game record of 355 yards. Kizzie had set that mark against John Marshall on Sept. 16, 2005, nearly 20 years before Scott broke it.
Now Kizzie’s career touchdown marks are next on the watch list.
A Matchup Connected to the Beginning
Clover Hill also holds a unique place in the story of the current Huguenot program.
The Scott era officially began against the Cavaliers on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023. Huguenot won 75-6 that night, tying the program record for points in a game and taking a 50-0 lead into halftime.
It was also the beginning of something much bigger for Iveon Lewis.
Then a freshman, Lewis caught the first receiving touchdown of his varsity career in the game. It was also Huguenot’s first receiving touchdown of the Scott era. His recruitment accelerated soon afterward, with Virginia Tech becoming one of his early offers as Lewis began developing into one of the state’s most highly recruited receivers.
Three years later, Lewis returns to this matchup as a senior and one of the most accomplished receivers in Huguenot history. He opened his final season with four catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns against Highland Springs.
Records Have Followed This Series
Each Huguenot-Clover Hill meeting of the Scott era has produced a new entry in the program record book.
After the 75-point performance in 2023, Huguenot raised the bar again the following season.
In 2024, the Falcons scored 50 points in a quarter, 68 points in a half and 81 points in the game, establishing new Huguenot records in all three categories.
Then came Scott Jr.’s 409-yard passing performance in 2025.
That history adds intrigue to Friday night, although the Falcons’ priority will remain much larger than chasing numbers. Huguenot enters its home opener looking to build on the standard established during its season-opening performance at Highland Springs.
Clover Hill Looking for a Response
Clover Hill enters Friday under head coach Matt Hutchins after opening the season with a 49-9 loss to Meadowbrook.
The Cavaliers have been searching for sustained success in recent seasons and have not posted a winning season since 2019, when Bryan Jennings led the program. Jennings had previously coached at Huguenot before moving to Clover Hill and is now the head coach at James River.
The recent history between the Falcons and Cavaliers looks very different from the series that existed before the current Huguenot staff arrived.
Clover Hill won every meeting from 2008 through 2015 and again from 2018 through 2022. Huguenot broke through with victories in 2016 and 2017 before the Cavaliers regained control of the series.
Huguenot has reversed that trend over the past three seasons, but Clover Hill still owns a 21-18 advantage in the all-time series.
Building on the Highland Springs Win
For Huguenot, Friday represents a different type of challenge from the opener.
The Falcons entered Highland Springs with much of the outside conversation centered on whether their offensive and defensive fronts could hold up against one of the Richmond area’s most physical programs. Huguenot answered that question with a performance that included holding Highland Springs to only 27 first-half yards while giving Scott enough time to produce 372 yards through the air.
Now the challenge becomes maintaining the same level of focus against an opponent entering under very different expectations.
Huguenot will again have a deep collection of offensive weapons available. Lewis leads the receiving corps alongside Jhamari Cain, Najarn Bostic and Kaidyn Bailey, who caught the first varsity touchdown of his career on a 65-yard reception against Highland Springs. Randal Robinson Jr. and Aaron Bowling provide options in the backfield, with Bowling scoring Huguenot’s third touchdown in the opener.
Defensively, Jayce Bigelow, Romelo Perry, Chris Green and Zayvon Miller were among the Falcons consistently affecting Highland Springs quarterback Dashaun Chisem. Huguenot will look for that same pursuit and physicality in its home debut.
Green Out at McFee
Friday will be Huguenot’s first opportunity to play in front of its home crowd in a regular-season game this fall.
McFee Field has continued to become an important part of the identity surrounding the program, and the Green Out gives Falcon fans their first opportunity of 2026 to create a home-field atmosphere around the team.
Weather could play a role as well. Friday’s forecast calls for temperatures reaching into the mid-80s with a possibility of rain during the day, making conditions something to watch as kickoff approaches.
Huguenot already experienced a lengthy weather delay in its season opener, when rain and lightning pushed the Highland Springs game well beyond its scheduled start. The Falcons responded by remaining focused before eventually taking the field and winning 28-7.
Another Opportunity at McFee
Friday night begins the home portion of Huguenot’s schedule, but it also continues a series that has repeatedly produced significant moments for the program.
The first game of the Scott era came against Clover Hill. Lewis’ first career touchdown came against Clover Hill. Huguenot has established scoring records against Clover Hill, and Scott broke the school’s single-game passing record against the Cavaliers last season.
Now, with Scott approaching two more Huguenot career records, history once again sits within reach.
The Falcons’ larger task, however, is simpler: build on Week 1, protect McFee Field and move to 2-0.
