Game Recap: Falcons Pull Away After Halftime, Shut Out Cosby 34-0
MOSELEY, Va. – Huguenot did not have its cleanest start Friday night at Cosby, but by the time the second half settled in, the Falcons had taken complete control.
Huguenot overcame a scoreless first quarter, two first-half interceptions and several missed opportunities to defeat Cosby 34-0, improving to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Dominion District play while recording its second consecutive shutout.
The night was hot, humid and muggy, with bad weather in the area, but the worst of it never reached the stadium. On the field, the first half was much more uncomfortable for Huguenot than the final score suggests.
The Falcons led just 6-0 at halftime, and Cosby went into the locker room with momentum after intercepting Charles Scott Jr. late in the second quarter. The Titans ran off the field energized, feeding off their crowd and believing they were still firmly in the game.
That feeling did not last long.
Slow Start, Missed Opportunities
Huguenot moved the ball throughout the first half but repeatedly hurt itself.
Scott Jr. threw interceptions in both the first and second quarters, while Randal Robinson Jr. had two touchdown runs erased by holding penalties.
The Falcons still found the end zone when Iveon Lewis turned a short pass into a long touchdown, taking the ball from around midfield and doing most of the damage after the catch.
Lewis’ ability to create yards after the catch gave Huguenot the only score of the half.
Cosby had its best chance to answer in the second quarter, driving all the way to the Huguenot 1-yard line with an opportunity to take the lead.
The Falcons’ defense refused to give it up.
Green Ends Cosby Threat at the Goal Line
With Cosby threatening from inside the goal line, Chris Green came away with an interception in the end zone to finish the defensive stand and keep the Titans scoreless.
The play became one of the biggest moments of the night.
Instead of Cosby taking a lead into the later stages of the first half, Huguenot escaped the possession still in front.
That stop also helped preserve what would become the Falcons’ second straight shutout.
Huguenot has now gone eight consecutive quarters without allowing a point after shutting out Clover Hill the previous week.
Halftime Message Changes the Game
The Falcons went into halftime ahead 6-0, but the first half did not meet the standard the coaching staff expected.
Huguenot had opportunities to create separation and repeatedly left points on the field through turnovers, penalties and missed execution.
The response was immediate after halftime.
Cosby opened the third quarter with a quick three-and-out, and Huguenot took over from there.
The Falcons drove the field for a touchdown to extend the lead to 12-0, then continued applying pressure as the third quarter progressed.
Najarn Bostic caught two touchdown passes in the quarter, and after his second score, Cairee Smith converted a two-point attempt to push Huguenot’s advantage to 20-0.
What had been a one-score game at halftime quickly became a comfortable Huguenot lead.
Jones Sparks Special Teams
Special teams provided another lift in the third quarter.
Jahmeer Jones nearly broke a punt return for a touchdown, getting into space before being tripped up just short of finishing the return.
The play gave Huguenot another field-position advantage and added to a second half in which the Falcons began controlling all three phases.
Jones finished with 16 rushing yards on one carry and added a 9-yard reception.
Bigelow, Wilson, Miller Lead Another Strong Defensive Night
The Huguenot defense continued its dominant start to the season.
Jayce Bigelow was nearly unblockable throughout the night, consistently disrupting Cosby’s offense and creating problems around the line of scrimmage.
Behind him, Quinn Wilson delivered one of his strongest performances of the season from the safety position, making several important plays and helping keep Cosby from generating explosive opportunities.
Zayvon Miller added to the defensive effort with a third-quarter interception, giving Huguenot another takeaway as the Falcons continued to pull away.
Green’s goal-line interception became the defining turnover, but the overall defensive effort went far beyond one play.
For the second straight week, Huguenot finished the game without allowing a single point.
Robinson and Bowling Control the Ground Game
Huguenot’s rushing attack became increasingly effective as the game progressed.
Randal Robinson Jr. carried 12 times for 121 yards, averaging more than 10 yards per attempt despite having two touchdown runs called back because of holding penalties.
Aaron Bowling also surpassed the 100-yard mark, finishing with 101 yards on 12 carries and scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown.
The pair combined for 222 rushing yards on 24 carries.
Bowling also added an 11-yard reception, while Jahmeer Jones contributed 16 rushing yards, Cairee Smith added four yards on three carries and Benny Morgan recorded a 3-yard rush.
The production on the ground helped Huguenot take control of the game after a first half dominated by mistakes.
Lewis Finishes It
Huguenot added another fourth-quarter touchdown through Bowling before Lewis provided the final score of the night.
Lewis finished with a season-high 13 receptions for 174 yards and two touchdowns, continuing a strong start to his senior season.
Scott Jr. finished 23-of-32 for 290 yards and four touchdowns, overcoming the two early interceptions to produce another productive night through the air.
Bostic caught three passes for 45 yards, with both of his touchdown receptions coming in the third quarter.
Jhamari Cain added three receptions for 20 yards, Kaidyn Bailey caught one pass for 11 yards, and Izaiah Jackson added one reception for 20 yards.
A Tale of Two Halves
The final score shows another decisive Huguenot victory, but the path to 34-0 was far different from the previous week.
The Falcons did not overwhelm Cosby immediately. They turned the ball over, had touchdowns erased by penalties and entered halftime with only six points.
Cosby had reason to believe.
Then Huguenot took it away.
The Falcons scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, added two more in the fourth and leaned on a defense that never allowed the Titans to find the end zone.
The result moves Huguenot to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Dominion District, with the Falcons having outscored their first three opponents 130-7.
More importantly, Huguenot leaves Cosby with another district victory, nearly three years after the same field produced the program’s most recent Dominion District loss.
This time, there was no overtime drama.
There was only a shutout.
