Game Recap: Huguenot Opens 2026 With 28-7 Win at Highland Springs
HIGHLAND SPRINGS, Va. – Huguenot waited through rain, lightning, multiple delays and a long night before finally getting the opportunity to take the field Friday at Victor W. Kreiter Stadium.
Once the Falcons were released onto the field, they made the wait worth it.
Huguenot opened the 2026 season with a convincing 28-7 victory over Highland Springs, combining explosive plays on offense with a dominant defensive performance to control one of the biggest early-season matchups in the Richmond area.
The game was originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff before being pushed back to 7:30 because of rain and lightning. Another delay moved the expected start to 8:15, and the Falcons spent much of the wait on the bus and inside a hot locker room without air conditioning.
The conditions were uncomfortable, but Huguenot stayed focused. After another lightning delay, the Falcons were finally cleared to take the field around 8:20 for warmups.
When stadium staff opened the gate, the team sprinted onto the field with energy, feeding off the excitement of finally getting the chance to play. Highland Springs entered shortly after, and the intensity between the two teams was evident before kickoff.
The game had sold out by early afternoon, and fans remained through the weather delays before filling the stadium as kickoff approached.
Early Miss, Quick Response
Huguenot opened the game by driving all the way to the Highland Springs 1-yard line but came away without points after two failed quarterback sneaks resulted in a turnover on downs.
Highland Springs quarterback Dashaun Chisem responded with a successful sneak to create breathing room, but the Springers eventually punted.
Huguenot answered immediately.
Quarterback Charles Scott Jr. connected with Iveon Lewis on a quick slant, and Lewis turned it into a 92-yard touchdown, giving the Falcons a 7-0 lead after Christopher Martinez converted the extra point.
The play flipped the momentum after Huguenot had come away empty on the opening possession and gave the Falcons control of the game.
Scott later threw an interception in the first quarter while attempting to get the ball out of bounds, but the Huguenot defense prevented Highland Springs from turning the mistake into points.
Defense Controls the First Half
The biggest question surrounding Huguenot entering the season centered on the line of scrimmage.
Friday night, the Falcons answered it.
Huguenot held Highland Springs to just 27 total yards in the first half, with much of that yardage coming on Chisem’s earlier quarterback sneak.
Jayce Bigelow, Chris Green, Romelo Perry and Zayvon Miller were consistently around Chisem throughout the night, making it difficult for Highland Springs to establish the run-heavy offense it had shown in its season-opening win over Hopewell.
Bigelow stood out in particular, repeatedly finding his way into the action and helping set the tone for a defense that controlled the Springers for most of the night.
The Falcons’ ability to win up front allowed the linebackers and secondary to play fast and prevented Highland Springs from sustaining long drives.
Scott and Lewis Connect Again
Huguenot extended its lead late in the second quarter.
With 35 seconds remaining before halftime, Scott found Lewis again for a 19-yard touchdown, and Martinez converted the extra point to give the Falcons a 14-0 advantage at the break.
Lewis finished the night with four receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns, averaging nearly 46 yards per catch.
Scott was just as productive, completing 14 of 19 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns while adding 52 rushing yards on five carries.
The junior quarterback finished with 424 total yards of offense in his first game of the season.
Falcons Pull Away After Halftime
Both offenses were relatively quiet for much of the third quarter before Huguenot added another score late in the period.
With 1:31 remaining in the third, Aaron Bowling scored on a 1-yard run to extend the Falcons’ lead to 21-0.
Bowling finished with five carries for 15 yards and the touchdown while also catching three passes for 18 yards.
Huguenot added its final touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Scott connected with sophomore Kaidyn Bailey, who made the catch between two defenders and took it the rest of the way for a 65-yard touchdown with 9:27 remaining.
It was the first varsity touchdown of Bailey’s career and pushed Huguenot’s advantage to 28-0.
Bailey finished with two catches for 77 yards and one touchdown.
Highland Springs scored late in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons had already built a commanding lead and closed out the night with a 28-7 victory.
Production Across the Offense
While Scott and Lewis produced the biggest numbers, Huguenot received contributions from several players.
Jhamari Cain caught two passes for 42 yards, while Najarn Bostic finished with three receptions for 52 yards and added 13 rushing yards on two carries.
Randal Robinson Jr. carried five times for 18 yards, and Bowling contributed both as a runner and receiver.
Martinez was perfect in the kicking game, converting all four extra-point attempts.
The offensive line also answered one of the biggest preseason questions surrounding Huguenot. The Falcons gave Scott enough time to attack downfield and created enough stability up front for the offense to produce several explosive plays.
Big-Game Atmosphere
The matchup drew attention beyond the two programs.
Virginia head coach Tony Elliott was in attendance, along with former NFL running back LeSean McCoy, adding to the profile of an already high-interest game.
The sold-out crowd, lengthy weather delays and humid conditions created an unusual game-day environment, but Huguenot handled each part of the night without losing its focus.
The Falcons responded after missing an early scoring opportunity, controlled the game defensively and consistently capitalized when explosive-play chances appeared.
A Strong Opening Statement
Huguenot entered the season with plenty of attention on its athletes and skill-position talent, but much of the outside conversation centered on whether the Falcons could handle a physical opponent at the line of scrimmage.
Against Highland Springs, they did.
The defense controlled the first half, the offensive line gave Scott opportunities to attack downfield, and Huguenot produced four touchdowns while limiting the Springers to one late score.
After waiting through hours of weather delays, the Falcons left Victor W. Kreiter Stadium with a 28-7 victory and a 1-0 record, opening the 2026 season with one of the strongest performances in the Richmond area.
